Grateful for the Response to Our First Call

The response to the first call for AI & Power Discourse Quarterly exceeded the expectations attached to a new publication. More important than volume alone was the range of questions represented in the submissions: artificial intelligence as infrastructure, discourse as governance, automated classification, institutional legitimacy, platform moderation, geopolitical asymmetry, and the changing status of authorship under machine-mediated communication.

That response confirmed the premise behind the journal. AI is no longer a bounded technical object that can be examined adequately from engineering alone. It increasingly participates in the production, circulation, and normalization of institutional language. The question is not simply what systems can generate, predict, or classify. It is what forms of authority become possible when those operations are embedded in everyday discourse.

A field is taking shape

The submissions revealed a field that is still institutionally fragmented but conceptually convergent. Researchers working in linguistics, political theory, media studies, law, philosophy, sociology, digital humanities, and AI governance are encountering versions of the same problem: automated systems do not merely process language. They participate in structuring the conditions under which claims appear legitimate, neutral, risky, authoritative, or unacceptable.

This convergence matters because the political effects of AI are often most visible at the level of form. A ranking can reorganize attention. A summary can remove an agent. A moderation label can redefine a political statement as a safety object. A risk score can convert uncertainty into administrative action. None of these mechanisms requires a machine to possess intention. Institutional force can emerge from repeated structures that are accepted as operationally valid.

What the journal is looking for

AI & Power Discourse Quarterly is interested in work that treats language as part of the machinery of power rather than as a transparent vehicle for information. We are particularly interested in research capable of connecting formal analysis with institutional consequences: how agency is distributed, how responsibility is obscured or preserved, how legitimacy is encoded, how asymmetries are naturalized, and how automated discourse reorganizes political visibility.

The first response demonstrated that this agenda is not confined to one discipline or one political geography. It is a research problem with global scope. As AI systems become embedded in public administration, media, finance, education, security, law, and platform governance, the need for precise analysis of their discourse becomes more urgent.

A beginning, not a conclusion

The purpose of a first call is usually to test whether a publication can find its audience. In this case, the response did something more: it demonstrated that the object of study already exists as a shared intellectual problem, even if its vocabulary is still being built.

The journal will continue to develop that vocabulary through research that is critical without becoming impressionistic, interdisciplinary without sacrificing method, and politically attentive without abandoning analytical precision. That is the standard the project intends to maintain as the conversation expands.
